I haven't been this moved by... anything... in a while. And coming from an anime, that is pretty amazing for me. I've been out of the anime scene for a little while now, only been catching the big things like Champloo and Bebop. But lately I've been delving into the subs to see what I should be buying. First series I sank my teeth into was Utawarerumono which was pretty decent but ultimately a little shallow and generic. Some awesome fight scenes and stuff, and an overly complex ending, but nothing I hadn't felt like I'd seen before in some form. Kinda came away from it with a less than optimistic view on the other anime I would be seeing. Saw an ep of Air and really dug it, started getting other eps of that with an intention of watching the rest of it. Then on the way, Gurren Lagaan caught my eye and I thought I'd check it out.
And damn.
From the opening and the intro song I think I was pretty much hooked. And by the end of the first ep, I was deeply in love. The anime just simply has everything. Comedy, drama, fighting, robots, philosophy, fan service, pacing, scale... everything... all absolutely perfectly balanced. I'd find myself almost cheering in places... and almost crying in others. I was genuinely moved by it. And that is truly rare for a cynical old bastard like me
I've been listening to the soundtrack ever since and it is... just... sublime. Every time I hear this I basically collapse from deep emotional euphoria:

Don't know what it is... but it just hits me. Love it. Absolutely.
I think I needed this anime, it seems to have come along at the exact right time. I feel so inspired by it. I don't think I'll ever do anything like it, but just the promise that something so fun, with such expertly crafted action and explosions and girls and moles, can be so deeply affecting... fills me with hope. My drill will pierce the heavens
Ahhhh...
Anyways, just felt the need to share. If any of you haven't seen this yet and are even remotely interested in anime (feck it, even if you're not), I implore you. Do so. Then come and talk to me about it
Hope youse guys are well. I'm slowly restoring my DA time allotment back to what it was.
Catch youse.
PS: 4 more days of Warcraft! Woohoo!
Screw it, I can't resist

woman, i cannot animate without pants!
I watched some Gurren Lagann quite some time ago. It initially struck me as a pretty enjoyable watch, until about episode 7 or so - the one with the hot spa, shit blows up and everyone ends up naked at the end. Under normal circumstances, this would be awesome, but after watching 2/3rds of an episode trudge along to have everything else thrown in the last third at an insanely ludicrous pace with little regard for anything else, I came to the realisation that the series just wasn't for me, and stopped watching there.
Now Black Lagoon, that's more like it! >_>

Oh, and if you want a good one to try and catch (if you like great sci-fi that is), then try Planetes.

Yeah Black Lagoon looks sweet. I caught the first ep and I'm pretty keen. I'll think that will be third or fourth on my viewing list
